DEATH: The death took place of John O Connor, Kilcooley on 13th May at his daughters residence in Beale. Removal took place from Casey’s Funeral Home Causeway to the Sacred Heart Church Kilmoyley on Saturday evening. Burial took place in Ardfert Church Graveyard after Requiem Mass on Sunday. Sympathy is extended to his family, relatives and friends. May he rest in peace.

KINGDOM COUNTY FAIR: Well done to Amy Corridon and Kate Maunsell, students of Kilmoyley NS who both won prizes at the Kingdom County Fair which was held in Ballybeggan Racecourse Tralee, recently. Amy was honoured in two categories-Handwriting and Designing a Bookmark. Kate was presented with an award for her skill in “walking” a calf. Well done girls.
CERTIFICATE IN SPIRITUALITY: For the past number of months a group of participants attended a “Certificate in Spirituality” course in the Ardfert Retreat Centre. The course was co-ordinated by Sr. Elizabeth and AnneMarie Whelan. Each week a guest speaker addressed the group on a variety of topics such as Scripture, The Psalms, Sacraments, Ritual and Symbol, Spirituality in everyday life. On Wednesday 13th May the final night of the course, mass was celebrated by Bishop Ray Brown and each member of the group was presented with their certificate. The course is being offered again beginning in the autumn and all details can be got by contacting the Ardfert Retreat Centre. TIDY TOWNS KILMOYLEY (TTK): Saol Glan is an initiative of Tidy Towns Kilmoyley where the group will invite a guest speaker to make a presentation on topics related to the environment. The first of these events was held in the Community Care Centre on Thursday 14th May when Micheál Ó Coileáin, Environmental Awareness Officer with Kerry County Council gave a wonderful address on “Respecting our Waste, Energy and Water”. Micheál gave great credit to schools and local community groups like Tidy Towns for the effort they make in keeping their locality litter free. However, he also acknowledged that there is a problem with illegal dumping. Litter is waste in the wrong place. Small changes such as proper disposal of litter will have a positive impact on the environment. He encouraged all present to recycle:-paper, bottles, plastic, metals. He also recommended cutting down on food waste by being a smarter shopper. Tea was served after the presentation and people had an opportunity to meet and chat with Micheál.
WALKING GROUP: This Sunday 24th May the group have the Glanageenty Loop-Ballymacelligott walk. It is approx 3.5 hours of wooded landscape, rivers with some pulls. Dont forget the walking boots, sticks and lunch. Meet at An Tochar car park at 9.30am. Wednesday morning meet at 9am.
ARDFERT MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL: On Sunday June 7th Ardfert village will hold a Medieval Festival to celebrate the Feast of St Brendan. Residents will awake to see part of the village green transformed into a medieval village thanks to the members of Waterford Viking Historical Re-enactment Society. A poultry show organized by the local gun club will take place in the morning. In the afternoon there will be the Parish Pride Championship. Neighbouring parishes will participate in challenges such as jousting, tug of war, pie eating, and log throwing. Live music will be performed during the festival.
Finally there will be a concert in Ardfert Cathedral that evening at 7.30pm. Kerry Choral Union along with the junior choir, some 80 singers in all, will be performing in the open air nave of the cathedral. A Great Family Fun Day is promised.
COMMUNITY GAMES: Athletics & long puck: Our area athletics and long puck competitions took place on lastThursday evening in Walnut Grove. We had some very exciting races and field events. Well done to all the kids that turned up to compete. Congratulations to everyone who qualified for the county finals. The long puck will take place on Tuesday 16th June and Athletics finals are on the weekend of 20th/21st June. Thanks to St Brendan’s Athletics Club for helping organise the event and to all the parents who helped on the evening. Skittle: Well done to the U14 skittles team which came a respectable 3rd. Best of luck to our U16 skittles team which will be competing on Friday 22/5/15. Tag rugby: Best of luck to the U11 tag rugby team which will be competing on Sunday May 24th.
