LOCAL NEWS WEEK BEGINNING 11TH MAY 2015

COMMUNITY CARE LOTTO:

The numbers drawn for the Lotto of the 4th May were 9,12,14,18.  Numbers were drawn by Eddie Meehan.  There was no jackpot winner of €5,200.  Two €50 winners were Richard Flaherty, Lerrig and Sandra Dineen, Ballinvoher.  Community Centre bookings 087-1611720.

 

CONFIRMATION:

Congratulations to the girls and boys from sixth class of Kilmoyley and Ardfert who made their confirmation last week. 

 

KILMOYLEY OLD GRAVEYARD MASS:

The Mass will take place at the old graveyard on Thursday the 18th June at 8.15pm.  Now is the time to tidy up family graves and inform relatives living away from home of the Mass. 

 

CYCLING CLUB:  The cycling club have 2 spins now. One on a Sunday leaving at 9am and the other at 1pm. Also Tuesday evenings at 7pm. All starting from the Community Care Centre. For registration or information contact Bernie 087 6817796 or Paddy 087 2494381.

 

TIDY TOWNS:

Reminder of the Environmental Lecture Series, the first of which takes place this Thursday night the 14th May at 8.30 at the Community Care Centre. Lecture will be given by Michael O’Coileain Environmental officer of Kerry Co Council.  All welcome to attend.  All these lectures are free and open to the general public including children and teenagers.

COMPETITION TIME – As the evenings are getting longer and the weather becomes warmer, it’s perfect time to get those green fingers active. To acknowledge the wonderful support of locals in keeping our parish looking bright and tidy, Kilmoyley tidy towns is delighted to announce its inaugural front garden competition for the coming year. Awards will be given in the following categories: The best front garden.  Best window box.  Best hanging basket.  Best floral display. 

Each category will be judged by a representative from Liscahane Nursery and Garden centre. Best of luck.

 

COMMUNITY GAMES:

Athletics and long puck competition takes place on Thursday 14th May in Walnut Grove. Long Puck for U12 boys & U14 girls at 6pm followed by athletics for ages U8-U16 at 6:30pm.  Check out Ardfert/Kilmoyley Community Games Facebook page for full details or contact Trina on 086-4070253.

Football:  Well done to our U14 Girls Gaelic football team who competed in Legion on Bank Holiday Monday.  They played 4 tough games and improved with every game.  The standard on the day was extremely high and unfortunately the girls didn’t qualify for the semi-finals.  Thanks to all the girls who played on the day and to their mentors, Tomás and Imelda.

Tag rugby:  U11 tag rugby training Saturday 5:30-6:60 at Banna astroturf. Competition takes place on Sunday May 24th.

CLUB NEWS 4TH MAY 2015

GAA NEWS:  POC FADA COMPETITION- The club would like to thank everyone who took part in and supported the Long Puck last Sunday around the ring in Kilmoyley.  It was a great success and the day stayed dry.  Sean Marshall, winner of two medals at the European Transplant and Dialysis Games last year, was invited to get the event underway.  Sean is promoting the Irish Kidney Association Organ Awareness and the Kilmoyley hurling club will make a donation towards the fund from the event on Sunday.  In the competition itself there was a tie for top place with Pierce Claffey and his team of Daniel Collins and Dougie Fitzell taking part in a free taking event against Aidan McCabe, Seanie and Maurice Murnane to decide the winners.  Congrats to Pierce and his team on winning the Patie(Patrick) O Hara Memorial trophy which Helen presented to them at An Tochar Ban on Sunday evening.  A prize for the “Best Puck of the Day” went to Brendan O Neill who set a great example to his team on the day and he was presented with his award on the night.  Ladies winners were Triona Curran, Aoife Godley and Kellie Meehan.  Under 16 boys winners were Conor Corrigan, Ciaran Monahan and Kian Doherty while the U11 winners were Robert Monahan, Ciaran Sheehy and Maeve Godley.   Winner of the weekend away for social members was Pete Young of Ballinorig and Paudie O Connor won the two hurleys (hope he will get to use them before the year is out) and winner of the juvenile players hurley was “hurler of the future” Tadhg Diggin, Ballinorig.  Congrats to all. 

Prize giving for the seniors was held at An Tochar Ban and thanks to Denis and Margaret Foley for providing entertainment and food on the evening.  A great evening was had by the crowd.  Thanks to the stewards on the day who did great work on organising traffic for the event.  Finally a special word of thanks to John Nolan for all the work he put into organising the event and to making sure it was a success.

 

RESULTS – Div 2 Co League Kilmoyley had a good win over Kenmare on Wednesday evening last.

U12 CO LEAGUE Kilmoyley 0-03 V Crotta 2-05.

 

FIXTURES – U14 Co Lg Kilmoyley V Ballyheigue in Ballyheigue on Saturday the 9th at 6pm.

U11 NK Championship Kilmoyley V Lixnaw on Friday evening in Lixnaw.

KERRY HURLERS – Well done to everyone involved with the Kerry hurlers on their win over Down on Saturday last in Tralee and to Dougie, Daniel, Adrian and Big Jim.  They will now play Meath on this Saturday 9th May. 

 

CAMOGIE – Congratulations to the Kerry Camogie team on winning the Division 4 final against Birr on Sunday.  This was a great achievement for the team and looks well for Kerry camogie in the future.  Well done to all and to the Kilmoyley girls, Saidhbhe Horgan, Jessica Fitzell, Orla Young, Laura Collins and Alanna Maunsell and of course to Pete Young their trainer who has put in a lot of work with the team.

KILMOYLEY GOLF SOCIETY/RESULTS:  Results from Mahony’s Point Golf outing.  1st Eddie Flaherty, with a great score of 44pts.  2nd John Dowling, 42pts.  3rd Robert McElligott, 39 pts.  Section B – Michael Meehan Snr.  Nearest to the pin J.J. McElligott.  With a long drive that Rory Mc ilroy would be proud of it was Michael Meehan Snr.  Thanks to Bert Sheehy of Energywise Ireland for sponsoring the event.

 

CILLARD CAMOGIE CLUB/COFFEE MORNING:  Cillard Camogie Club will be holding a Tea/Coffee morning with bake sale for the U14 Feile Team on this coming Sunday May the 10th at 10.45 a.m. after Mass at An Tochar Ban.  All baking donations welcome.  Your support would be greatly appreciated on the morning.

 

MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL:  A Medieval Festival is planned for Ardfert in the near future.  They are looking for a 5 man team that will take part to represent the Parish.  Team event will intake Tug-o-War, with 5 individual events for the same 5 members of the team.  Anyone interested please contact Maurice Fitzgerald by Friday (0872308380).

 

KILMOYLEY NATIONAL SCHOOL NEWS:  Soccer News – Oisín Kearney, Colm Mc Elligott, Darragh Corridon, Jevon Carey, Tomás Godley and Shayne Stack were presented with medals for successfully completing the training programme with Fenit Samphire’s Soccer club.  The boys were awarded for their commitment and dedication to the club.  The medals were presented to the boys at the End of Year Blitz where all the players had an opportunity to display their new skills.  Well done boys.  Player of the Week – Ardfert footballer Mikey Corridon has won this week’s GAA Football Player of the Week award after his starring display in a recent U.8 match.  Mikey scored two goals in the game.  Gura fada buan tú.

 

KERRY ROSE SELECTION:  Best of luck to Triona Brassil who is representing Kerry Stars Olympics at the Kerry Rose Selection next Friday night in Ballyroe Hotel.  Triona is assistant secretary of Kilmoyley Hurling club and the club would also like to wish her the very best. 

 

WALKING GROUP:   This coming Sunday the 10th May the group have part of the dingle way.  They will drive to Ballyferriter where the group will go by bus to Brandon creek, and will then walk back to Ballyferriter.  It is approx four hours. Please have 10€ for the bus and also a reminder to new members to have boots, packed lunch and sticks.  Meet at Tochar Car park at 9.30am.  On Wednesday morning meet at Church car park at 9am.

 

TIDY TOWNS KILMOYLEY:  Tidy Towns Kilmoyley are pleased to announce the launch of the "Saol Glan Environmental Lecture Series". It is hoped to invite a number of guest speakers to the community to speak on a variety of topics ranging from environmental awareness and wildlife to heritage and farming. The inaugural lecture takes place on Thursday May 14th where Micheal O’Coileain – Environmental Officer Kerry County Council and Environmental Contributor to the Kerryman – will speak on the topic of ‘Respecting our Energy, Water and Waste’. The talk begins at 8.30 pm in Kilmoyley Community Care Centre and is followed by a Q & A session. All these lectures are free and open to the general public including children and teenagers. SYMPATHY – Sympathy is extended to Fr Nicholas Flynn on the recent death of his father.  Fr Nicholas spent some time in Kilmoyley as priest to the community.

GAA NEWS 27 APRIL 2015

POC FADA COMPETITON – Kilmoyley hurling club are hosting their second Fun “Poc Fada” Competition on this coming Sunday.  The Long Puck will be started by Sean Marshall who last year competed in the World Transplant Games and won three medals in the competition.  Sean played hurling with Kilmoyley and won a Minor County and North Kerry Championship medal in 1980.  The club are looking forward to his attendance on Sunday.

 

The competition was very successful last year and we are looking forward to a great turnout again.  It is a fun long puck and open to everyone.  Young and not so young, male or female.  Family entries also accepted.  Outside entrants also welcome.  Teams of three with the winners receiving the Patie O Hara Memorial Trophy.  Starting at 1.30 from the Sports field and also finishing back at the field.  Please contact John Nolan 087-9812676 for more information.  Stewards are also required for the day please contact John re same. SYMPATHY – The club wishes to express its sympathy to the family and relatives of Patrick Griffin formerly from Ballymacandrew, but had lived and worked in Killarney for many years.  Patrick was a member of the 1953 Minor team who brought the first Minor Co championship title back to the club.  He was an absolute true supporter of Kilmoyley and passionate about the game.  Even though he was living in Killarney he always attended Kilmoyley games and came home regularly.  May he rest in peace.

FEILE U14 TEAM – Commiserations to our U14 Feile team who unfortunately did not get through to the next stage of the Feile hurling competition. Played on Saturday last in perfect conditions in Kilmoyley, Ballyheigue and Ballyduff were their opposition. Our lads were beaten in both games but gave their best in each game.  Panel – Conor Corrigan, Evan Griffin, Alan Horgan, Liam Flaherty, David Godley, Dylan Griffin O Rourke, Jack Kearney, Marcus Leane, Cillian Monahan, Daire Nolan, Jim Wallace, Kian Regan, David Dineen, David Leane, Ronan Walsh, Jason Roche, Robert Monahan.   Special thanks to the generosity of the parents of the U14 team who put on a beautiful display of baking and sandwiches. Much appreciated to everyone who attended on the day.

DEATH:

 

The Death took place of Patrick (Paddy) Griffin of Marian Terrace, Killarney and formerly of Ballymacandrew, Kilmoyley.  Patrick’s remains were removed from O’Shea’s Funeral Home, Killarney on Sunday evening to St Mary’s Cathedral.  Burial took place after requiem mass on Monday to Aghadoe Cemetery, Killarney.  Sympathy is extended to his family, relatives and friends.  May he Rest in Peace.

KILMOYLEY NATIONAL SCHOOL:

 

Community Games – Congratulations to the U11 Kilmoyley/Ardfert hurlers and Tomas, Cian, Bobby, Conor and Darragh from the school who will be representing Kerry in the next round of the Community Games which will be hosted UL on 4th July.

Art Competition – Well done to Caoilinn and Caragh Kenny O’ Sullivan who participated in the “Top Model Art Competition” held in Eason’s Bookstore.  The girls won first prize for their art work. 

Doodle for Google – Thank you to everybody who voted for Colm and Mikey in the Doodle for Google competition.   A record 5,085 children participated in the competition this year. The boys reached the semi-final stage along with 73 more artists and were invited to an awards ceremony in the Google offices Dublin.  While the boys didn’t win the overall prize they were delighted with their day out in the capital.  Many thanks to their parents for all their support. 

 

CAMOGIE FEILE 2015:

 

Congratulations to Cillard Camogie captain Ciara Casey and her team who will be representing Kerry in the U14 Feile competition which will be held in June all the way up North.  They defeated Causeway in the play off last week.
