GAA NEWS – SYMPATHY

Kilmoyley hurling club wish to express its sympathy to the family and relatives of Rev Fr Xavier Lovett who died recently. Fr Xavier was a very loyal and true supporter of Kilmoyley Hurling club. He had an interest in all sports but hurling and football were among his favorites. He was part of the 1953 Kilmoyley team who won their first Minor Hurling Championship by beating Killarney who at the time were seeking their four in a row title.
Also in 1953 Fr Xavier played football with the St Brendan’s District who won the Co championship and he scored 3-01 in this final. He also won the Collins cup by beating Churchill in the final of the St Brendan’s Board and won a senior league football medal in 1955.
Studying for the priesthood in St Kieran’s College he missed the 1958 senior hurling final due to studies. He was then assigned to the diocese of Seattle in Washington and it was five years before he was back to Kilmoyley for a holiday and he played in the Senior hurling final where he held the position of wing forward and won his one and only Co final medal by beating Lixnaw. He played alongside his brother Declan and the late Sean (RIP).
Fr Xavier returned to Seattle where he remained until his death but holidays home to Kilmoyley were a great occasion and for as long as he could he always went to the hurling games and championship games and enjoyed watching the players train at the hurling field. He also visited the local national school on many occasions and spoke to the children about their interest in hurling. He was an inspiration to all who knew him and a true gentleman. May the green sod of Kilmoyley rest lightly on his gentle soul.

RESULTS – NK SENIOR HURLING LEAGUE Kilmoyley V Abbeydorney.

This game was played in Abbeydorney on Saturday evening in very breezy conditions.  Kilmoyley started well scoring 5pts in the first ten minutes before O Dorney pointed from a free and which led them to getting four more points in a row before Brendan Harris pointed from a free.  Kilmoyley were playing with a strong breeze in this half.  Half time score Kilmoyley 0-6, Abbeydorney 0-4.

Abbeydorney were to open the second half with a point from a free and it was points mainly from frees that won it out for Abbeydorney with our lads managing only two points in this half.  Final score Kilmoyley 0-8, Abbeydorney 0-11.

This was the first competitive game for the lads with only two subs available on the night due to some injuries and the unavailability of county players.  Even though it was a cold night it was encouraging to see a nice crowd from Kilmoyley there to support their team.  Thanks to those supporters that turned up.

Team – Sean Curran, Seanie Murnane, Sean Dowling, Sean Nolan, Tom Murnane(0-1f), James McCarthy, Jordan Brick, Brendan Harris(0-3f), Maurice O Connor, Robert Collins, Sean Godley, Tommy Maunsell(0-2), Luke Fitzell, Sean Maunsell(0-1), Joseph McElligott(0-1), Colman Savage and David Wallace.

 U14 CO HURLING LEAGUE Kilmoyley 2-04 V St Brendan’s 6-08.

Played in Kilmoyley on Sunday evening, Kilmoyley had to play with 14 men for most of the game as one player had to come off due to injury and we were without subs.  It was a stronger St Brendan’s who dominated this game but credit has to be given to the Kilmoyley lads who battled well and did not give up putting in a better second half.

Team Kian Regan, Alan Horgan, Thomas Curran, Jason Roche, Ciaran Monahan, Richard Flaherty, Cian Doherty, Kevin Crowe, Phil Maunsell(2f- 04,3f), Graham Murphy, Ronan Godley, David Godley, Liam Flaherty, Sean Regan, Daire Nolan.
